Terms & conditions
These are the terms you agree to when you book a class, buy a gift voucher or hire the kitchen privately at Emma Carlton's Bakery School. Please have a read before you book.
Last updated August 20261. Who we are
Emma Carlton's Bakery School ("we", "us", "our") is a bakery and cookery school based in the Cultural Quarter, North Shields. Our address is 62 Saville Street, North Shields, NE30 1ND and you can reach us at hello@emmacarlton.com.
By booking with us you accept these terms. If anything here is not clear, ask us before you book and we will explain it.
2. Booking and payment
- Classes are booked online through our booking system. Your place is confirmed once payment has been taken and you have received a confirmation email.
- Full payment is required at the time of booking unless we have agreed something different with you in writing.
- Places are limited and are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
- Prices shown at the time of booking are the prices you pay. We may change prices for future dates, but a change will never affect a booking you have already paid for.
3. What is included
Unless the class description says otherwise, your place includes all ingredients, use of equipment and aprons, tuition throughout the session, recipe cards, refreshments, and boxes to take home everything you have made.
4. Changes and cancellations by you
Classes and workshops are a live event, so once your booking is confirmed we are unable to accept refunds, cancellations or reschedule requests.
Places are limited and ingredients are ordered in advance for the people booked on, which is why we ask you to be sure of your date before you book. If you are not certain, please contact us first and we will help you pick a session that suits.
5. Changes and cancellations by us
Very occasionally we may need to cancel or move a class, for example because of illness, a problem with the premises, or too few bookings to run the session. If that happens we will contact you as soon as possible and offer you an alternative date or a full refund. We are not able to cover other costs you may have incurred, such as travel or accommodation.
6. Gift vouchers
- Vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase and the expiry date is shown on the voucher.
- Vouchers can be used against any class of equal or lesser value. If the class costs more, the difference can be paid at the time of booking.
- Vouchers are not exchangeable for cash and cannot be replaced if lost.
- Once a voucher has been redeemed against a date, the booking terms in section 4 apply and the place cannot be refunded, cancelled or rescheduled.
7. Arriving on the day
Please arrive at the time shown on your confirmation. Classes start promptly and we cannot hold up the group. If you arrive late we will do our best to bring you up to speed, but we cannot extend the session or offer a refund for any part of the class you have missed.
8. Allergies and dietary requirements
Tell us about any allergies, intolerances or dietary requirements at the time of booking so we can plan the class properly. We will always do our best to accommodate you.
Our kitchen handles gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts and other allergens, so we cannot guarantee that any bake is completely free from traces of them. If you have a severe allergy, please contact us before booking so we can talk it through honestly.
Anything you take home is your responsibility once it leaves the school. Bakes are freshly made, contain no preservatives and should be stored and eaten as advised on the day.
9. Age and supervision
- Our standard classes are for ages 14 and over.
- Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult who stays for the whole session.
- We run dedicated sessions for younger bakers from time to time. The age range is always stated in the class description.
10. In the kitchen
This is a working kitchen with hot ovens, sharp knives and electrical equipment. For everyone's safety we ask that you follow instructions given by your tutor at all times, wear closed toe shoes and tie long hair back, keep long or loose sleeves rolled up and remove hand jewellery where asked, and tell us straight away if you feel unwell or have an accident.
We can ask anyone to leave without a refund if their behaviour puts themselves, other guests or our team at risk, or if they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
11. Photography
We sometimes take photographs or short videos in class for our website and social media. Tell us on the day if you would rather not appear and we will keep you out of shot. You are very welcome to take your own photographs of your bakes.
12. Private hire, groups and corporate bookings
- Private sessions are confirmed with a deposit. The deposit amount, the date the balance is due and the deadline for confirming final numbers will be agreed with you in writing at the time of booking, as they vary with the size and type of the session.
- Deposits are non-refundable, as the date is held exclusively for you.
- Once final numbers have been confirmed, we cannot refund places that go unused.
13. Your belongings
Please keep an eye on your things. We cannot accept responsibility for personal belongings that are lost, damaged or left behind, although we will always help you look.
14. If something goes wrong
If you are unhappy with any part of your class, please tell us as soon as possible, ideally on the day, so we have the chance to put it right. Email us and we will respond promptly.
15. Our responsibility to you
We do not exclude or limit our liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud. Otherwise, our liability in connection with a booking is limited to the amount you paid for it, and we are not responsible for losses that were not foreseeable at the time of booking.
Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer.
16. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The version published on this page at the moment you book is the version that applies to your booking.
17. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any dispute will be dealt with by the courts of England and Wales.
